I saw “The Meg” in 2022 although it was released in the year 2018. You probably read my Review on “The Meg” before. Since then, had a desire to watch the sequel of this movie in the big screen and I didn’t waste a single second to book the movie on the Very First Day!!!! Yes, you read right, Meg 2: The Trench is my latest movie on screen.
People who have already watched “The Meg” will agree that this time the gigantic megalodon has opened its full size and it’s actually astonishing. You are bound to spend some anxious moments while watching this deadly 70 feet shark that became extinct around 3.6 million years before.
Meg 2: The Trench takes place in the deep ocean trenches, as the title suggests. The majority of the movie is shot underwater, but not in an underwater facility. Characters don exosuits that allow them to spend a lot of time walking on the ocean’s surface thanks to cutting-edge technology. This increases the likelihood of exhilarating encounters with the megalodon and other deep-sea species.
Plot
Meg 2: The Trench picks up some time after the events of the original Meg movie where a prehistoric megalodon shark was discovered and unleashed on the open ocean. As the research team explore this mysterious area, they are drawn into a dangerous encounter with a group of even larger and deadlier prehistoric sea creatures that lurk beneath the surface. Among these creatures is a giant prehistoric squid that seems to be the leader of the pack.
As they navigate these dangerous waters, they find themselves in a race against time to stop these creatures from wreaking havoc on the surface world.
Acting
The acting in Meg 2: The Trench is solid across the board. The returning cast members from the first film all reprise their roles with a sense of familiarity and confidence. Jason Statham once again leads the charge as the tough-as-nails shark hunter Jonas Taylor, who is brought back into the fold to help deal with this new threat.
Special Effects
One of the main draws of any shark movie is the special effects used to bring these terrifying creatures to life on screen, and Meg 2: The Trench does not disappoint in this area. The amount of detail and care put into the monster designs is impressive, and the computer-generated effects used to bring them to life are seamless and convincing.
The attention to detail in the effects extends beyond just the creatures, as the underwater worlds and environments that the characters explore are equally immersive and realistic.
Pacing
One area where Meg 2: The Trench struggles is with its pacing. The film takes a while to get going, with a slow and somewhat meandering first act that could have benefitted from a bit more momentum. However, once the action does kick into high gear, it doesn’t let up until the very end.
Overall Impression
Overall, Meg 2: The Trench is a worthy sequel that builds on the strengths of the first film while also introducing some new and exciting elements to the mix. The creatures are terrifying, the world-building is impressive, and the action is thrilling and blood-pumping.
While it may suffer from some pacing issues early on, it more than makes up for it with an exciting and satisfying conclusion that will leave audiences wanting more. If you’re a fan of creature features or just looking for a fun and exciting popcorn flick, then Meg 2: The Trench is definitely worth checking out.
Oh, whisper is in the air – there might be Meg 3 also in some time. Warner Bros is seriously thinking on that.
